Matt Otto is a Drama Desk and Lucille Lortel Award–nominated composer, sound designer, and adoptee based in New York City.
His work is rooted in exploring themes of identity, resistance, and belonging, with a focus on speaking truth to power and amplifying the lived experiences of people whose voices and perspectives are too often left off our stages. As an adoptee, he is especially drawn to works that ask Who am I? and Where do I fit in this world? Questions that resonate deeply with him and serve as a potent source of inspiration.
In New York, Matt has designed productions for companies including Red Bull Theater, The New Group, Audible, Pipeline Theatre Company, New York City Children’s Theater, Colt Coeur, Tectonic Theater Project, The Amoralists, The Barrow Group, Cherry Lane, The Atlantic Acting School Conservatory, New Saloon, and many others.
Regionally, his work has been heard at Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, Folger Theatre, Woolly Mammoth, GALA Hispanic Theatre, Imagination Stage, Brown/Trinity Rep, Yale Repertory Theatre, Arkansas Rep, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, Theatre Alaska, and more. He has also designed numerous productions for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Matt holds an MFA from the Yale School of Drama and a BFA from Boston University. He is a member of United Scenic Artists Local 829.
